Designed for automatic operation only, the 220EX flash unit excels at providing natural-looking balanced flash exposures. When attached to the advanced cameras, such as EOS IX, EOS Elan II/Elan IIe, or EOS Rebel G, the 220EX delivers the benefits of the Canon's superior technology. These include Canon's unique E-TTL evaluative pre-stored flash exposure control system, FE Lock for a new dimension of creative control and FP Flash (high-speed sync) for flash photography up to maximum shutter speed. When used with other cameras, it operates as a TTL autoflash (off-the-film flash metering).When in E-TTL operation, flash exposure is measured and controlled by the camera in combination with Canon's AIM system. Subject position, ambient light level, evaluative metering and pre-flash data are instantly analyzed, including heavy backlighting or reflections from background windows or mirrors.

A great flash and it really compliments my new Canon Camera. I have used this numberous times and have not been disappointed with the results.
about 24-25ft. I am satisfied with the performance of this flash for the purpose I needed it. But to my experience it is not more than the half way i.e. While using the Wide Angle attachment and the external flash I observed some times the focus and the white balance changes.
Any how, it justifies my saying it a " Substitute ". Hence, one has to make adjustments for these two things before shooting. This extenal flash works considerably well for this purpose. Over all the external flash serves as a good substitute for the built-in flash of the S5IS. The maximum range of the built-in flash is 17ft. The purpose of my going for this is to substitute the use of the built-in flash in case I resort to use the Wide Angle Lense attachment.
Remember I used the word " Substitute ". The maximum range of this external flash is specified as 51ft. When the Wide Angle attachment is used the built-in flash can not be used, as it gives a hemispherical shadow on the lower side of the picture due the 58mm size. I have taken some beautiful pictures during a marriage ceremony in India a few days ago. I purchased this item from Amazon for my Powershot S5IS two months back. It is, because the EFFECTIVE RANGE of this flash is little farther than the built-in flash.
Hence, it is suggestive to have an exterrnal flash to substitute the built in flash.
Of course if one has the camera with which this unit is fully compatible, it is essential to have this. For those who have bought a Canon digital camera with an external flash shoe, this is a very useful adjunct. I have tried shooting objects 30' away upping the ASA to 200 and got excellent results which no in-built flash can give.
this is the perfect flash for my G10 it works perfect would recomend for anyone using a smaller camera
